What does this stacked bar chart maker do?

It turns grouped numbers into a stacked bar chart, where each bar is a whole and each colored segment is one part of it. Before anything is drawn, the stacked bar chart maker adds duplicate rows together, totals each bar, and calculates the percentage each segment contributes. Those computed numbers are what the figure shows, so segment heights, percentage labels, and totals match your data. It works for research figures such as taxonomic composition or cell-type proportions, and for everyday coursework such as survey results or budget breakdowns.

Absolute vs. 100% stacked bar charts

  • An absolute stacked bar graph shows real totals: bar height is the sum of all segments, so you can compare both the whole and its parts.
  • A 100% stacked bar chart rescales every bar to 100%, so you compare proportions even when group sizes differ a lot.
  • Absolute stacking is the default. Mention "percent", "100%", "proportion", or "relative" in your instructions to switch to 100% stacking.
  • Use 100% stacking for composition questions ("what share is Firmicutes?") and absolute stacking for size questions ("which year produced the most?").

Long format vs. wide format data

  • Long format has one row per bar and segment: for example Group, Phylum, ReadCount. Map the bar group, the stack segment, and the value.
  • Wide format has one row per bar and one numeric column per segment: for example Question, Agree, Neutral, Disagree. Map only the bar group; every other numeric column becomes a segment.
  • Repeated bar-and-segment combinations are added together. Write "mean" or "average" to average them instead.

How to read a stacked bar chart

  • Compare totals using the full bar length, and compare the bottom segment directly because it shares a common baseline.
  • Middle segments are harder to compare across bars because they start at different heights; percentage labels help.
  • Keep the same segment order and colors in every bar so readers can follow each part.

Tips and supported instructions

  • Write "horizontal" for long category names such as survey questions; this is often called a horizontal stacked bar or stacked column chart turned sideways.
  • Bars keep their source order unless you write "sort", which orders them by total, or "sort by <segment>", which orders them by that segment.
  • Up to 20 bars and 12 segments are drawn; the smallest segments are merged into "Other" and the chart says so.
  • Negative values are excluded, because stacked bars show parts of a positive whole.
